The canopy section is one of the most difficult areas to build in the spitfire.

The canopy is about Full scale. It has been designed using the original spitfire prints. I felt that here is were the spitfire looks authentic, Not just a poor imitation. I have full auto cad drawing on all items. They are to numerous to detail in this section. If anyone wants these details please feel free to e-mail me for information. An entire web site could be needed to do the cockpit and canopy section.




The canopy Sections will cover the following items.

  • Front canopy design and build. add the clear polymer plastic.
  • Design and build the new main canopy slide rails, as used in the original spitfire. (more on this later).
  • Design and build the rear canopy structure with the polymer plastic.
  • Design and build the main canopy. This canopy was blow by Airplane Plastics. Address at bottom of screen.
  • Attach plastic canopy to new designed steel structure.
  • Frame all plastic with aluminum skin just as in the spitfire.
  • Design the door frame cutout and handle assembly.
  • Design and build the door release.
  • Design and build the canopy latch and release mechanism.

The Rear canopy.

The rear canopy contained the radio, and several other components in the original spitfire. I have used this area as a small storage area, and the section behind the rear canopy has the strobe and battery compartment. I needed the battery in this area for weight and balance. The rear canopy was preformed polymer aircraft plastics made by aircraft plastics of Ohio. They are a very accommodating company and supply on time and at a fair price. The plastic is smoke in color. To install this item is very time consuming and take many cut and fit operations. I made it removable which makes it even harder. You have to cut a small half circle to accommodate the transmitter antenna. If you want to have the canopy removable, for storage. it can be done.


Attach plastic Main canopy to new designed steel structure.

This process is a very difficult. With all the stressors, the canopy structure had to be very strong. I'll show more photos as needed. The canopy structure is the same as the original spitfire. The canopy slides on four trapped slide shoes. The shoes are made to easily remove the canopy. The pilot simply pullers four pins and the canopy releases.


Front canopy design and build. Add the clear polymer plastic.

The front canopy is made up of four sections, front, left and right side and top cover. All panels are mostly flat, with some shaping on the sides and the small top which is formed This piece with frame will hold the rear view mirror. I used aircraft plastics of Ohio to build the canopy. Very nice people to work with. They also preformed the main canopy, with forms I provided. The canopy was delivered on time and I cannot say enough about the professional work performed. Without them I'd still be looking.

Each polymer is smoke in color, and is epoxied in a scotch weld product. I found out that for the epoxy will only hold if you really scuff up your polymer parts. I used tape to help contain the areas of scuffing. You don't have to be to careful because the aluminum frame will cover up any area you might just overshoot. The heaver frame has four flat plates welded at the feet of each frame. These plates are drilled and held in place with Number 8 screws & washers, screwed to rev nuts. In this picture the frame is setting on the wood frame. The frame is open for wiring, an aluminum skin has been removed for ease of wiring. The front frame structure helps strengthen the cock pit around the door assembly.
